A slogan of arithmetic geometry is that ”geometry controls arithmetic”: as the geometric complexity increases, the arithmetic also becomes more complicated. In this talk, I will discuss results in this direction that show that there are many number fields that cannot appear as the residue field of points on a fixed curve of genus at least 2. This is joint work with Bianca Viray.
