SEMINARS
When: October 24, 2024
3:00 pm - 4:15 pm
Where: Science Center 412
Address:
1 Oxford Street, Cambridge 02138, United States
Speaker: Sarah Chisholm - Dalhousie University
Participants will reflect on their teaching experiences and share strategies for creating a more effective, inclusive, and welcoming math classroom. We will discuss how the small class structure at Harvard supports these efforts. Since not all teaching contexts allow for small class sizes, we will explore techniques for fostering the close-knit experience of a small class in larger settings. Sarah will share her experience adapting successful strategies from Harvard to larger classroom environments at Dalhousie University. Key themes we will explore include increasing engagement with office hours, implementing active learning in large classes, introducing yourself and the instructional team effectively through the syllabus before the course begins, and making the overall course experience more inclusive and welcoming.
