In the case of manifolds, Hirzebruch showed how to unify the theories of characteristic classes of Chern, Todd and Thom-Hirzebruch. These three theories have been generalized to the case of singular complex algebraic varieties as natural transformations of functors. We show how motivic theory allows these natural transformations to be unified and what the underlying problems are.
