The focus of this talk will be the moduli space of logarithmic G-Higgs bundles on a smooth projective curve, where G is a reductive group. I will explain some recent progress towards understanding the intersection cohomology of this moduli space: a description of the decomposition theorem for the corresponding Hitchin fibration. This is based on work in progress joint with Mark de Cataldo, Roberto Fringuelli and Mirko Mauri.
