Math Seminar: How Harvard Math Students Use AI: Results from a 2025 Department Survey

SEMINARS

When: December 8, 2025
3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Where: Science Center 507
Address: 1 Oxford Street, Cambridge, MA 02138, United States

This seminar will share results from a recent anonymous survey examining how Harvard students use artificial intelligence tools, particularly large language models such as ChatGPT, in their mathematics courses. The survey includes responses from current math concentrators, prospective concentrators, and students enrolled in introductory courses, providing a broad view of student engagement with AI across levels. We will present trends in how frequently and for what purposes students use these tools, how patterns of AI use relate to other learning resources and course policy statements, and what reasons students report for choosing to use or avoid AI in their coursework. The session is intended for all members of the Harvard mathematics community interested or involved in teaching undergraduates. Attendees are invited to contribute questions and ideas in advance through this link so that we can prepare responses drawing on the survey data. We will reserve time for discussion and collaborative reflection on how the department might adapt its messaging, course design, and instructional practices in a world increasingly impacted by generative AI technologies.
