Shaping Mathematics Education at Scale: From Jameel’s Vision to National Practice

From 2005 to 2008 at UC Berkeley, and from 2008 onward at Harvard, Jameel Al-Aidroos was deeply involved in the pedagogical training and mentorship of mathematics graduate students. His work shaped generations of teaching fellows, both as assistants and as instructors of record, and helped establish departmental cultures that valued teaching as a professional practice. At Harvard, Jameel’s leadership in the Teaching Undergraduate Mathematics Seminar (TUMS) created a space for future faculty to engage in reflective, collaborative, and evidence-based teaching.

In this talk, I will reflect on Jameel’s pedagogical legacy and situate it within a broader national conversation about graduate student professional development in mathematics. Drawing on data from the NSF funded CoMInDS project—including a national survey of mathematics departments—I will highlight emerging trends, persistent gaps, and evolving models for preparing graduate students to teach. As R1 institutions continue to play an outsized role in shaping the faculty pipeline, how are they responding to calls for more structured, inclusive, and research-informed teaching preparation? And what does it mean to carry forward a legacy like Jameel’s in the context of growing national momentum for pedagogical reform?

Emily Braley is Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Academic Affairs at Johns Hopkins University. She assists in leadership efforts to establish equity in STEM success across student populations in collaboration with the Center for Student Success and STEM departments. She works directly with departments to cultivate pedagogical innovation and best practices in STEM teaching, and supports departments in their evaluation and assessment efforts. She also oversee training and implementation of undergraduate learning assessment at the Krieger School, serves on the Shared Governance Council, and is a representative for the school on the University Council of Learning Assessment. Emily Braley is also an associate teaching professor in the Department of Mathematics.

Organized by Brendan Kelly | Harvard Department of Mathematics Senior Preceptor, Director of Introductory Mathematics

This speaker series is a small way to remember Jameel Al-Aidroos, his extraordinary warmth of character and pedagogical skills, and his contributions and dedication to teaching and learning at Harvard. He motivated and inspired his students and colleagues; through this series, we hope to celebrate and keep alive that legacy by bringing speakers who share new perspectives on mathematics and pedagogy, and motivate us to reflect on our professional roles.
