The existence of exotic spheres — spheres with a non-standard smooth structure — is one of the great surprises of high-dimensional topology. In this talk, we will discuss some of the rich geometry underlying the construction and detection of 7-dimensional exotic spheres, the smallest dimension in which exotic spheres are known to exist.
