Jacob Tsimerman Receives 2026 Fields Medal

Congratulations to former Harvard math Junior Fellow, Jacob Tsimerman, currently professor of mathematics at the University of Toronto, for receiving one of the four 2026 Fields Medals!

Tsimerman is a number theorist best known for his work on the André-Oort conjecture, which helps describe higher-dimension objects called “Shimura varieties.” Those shapes are closely connected with “Diophantine equations,” including the one from Fermat’s last theorem: aⁿ + bⁿ = cⁿ. The International Mathematical Union, the organization that awards Fields Medals, cited Tsimerman “for his role in the vast extension of the scope of o-minimal techniques within arithmetic and complex algebraic geometry, including the proof of Griffiths’ conjecture on the algebraicity of images of the period maps.”

According to Tsimerman, the next focus of his research is artificial intelligence. He wants to make sure powerful A.I. models don’t run amok.

The Fields Medal, nicknamed the Nobel Prize of mathematics, recognizes outstanding achievement and the promise of future achievement by two to four mathematicians under 40. It is awarded every four years on the occasion of the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), this year held in Philadelphia, PA. Each winner receives 15,000 Canadian dollars (approximately $10,600) and a gold medal bearing the visage of the Greek mathematician Archimedes.

The three other mathematicians honored this year include Yu Deng of the University of Chicago, John Pardon of Stony Brook University in New York, and Hong Wang of New York University and France’s Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES).

“The four medalists exemplify the depth, originality and vitality of contemporary mathematics, and we are delighted to celebrate their achievements at the International Congress of Mathematicians,” says Hiraku Nakajima, president of the IMU.
