Not the Goldbach Conjecture
The Goldbach Conjecture states that any even number bigger than or equal to four can be written as the sum of two primes. Although this conjecture remains open, Vinogradov proved in 1937 that any sufficiently large odd number can be written as a sum of three primes. I will present a proof of this theorem and discuss some of the basic ideas and techniques in analytic number theory.
The alcove seminar's name originates from the traditional venue for it's meetings: the small alcoves spotting the halls of the math department. The seminar is aimed at being more approachable than the department number theory seminar.
