Title

Equidistribution problems on homogeneous spaces and bounds for L-functions.

Abstract

In these talks, we'll discuss some natural equidistribution problems on homogeneous spaces which arise in number theory. It turns out that, for rank one spaces, these problems are best solved by proving "subconvexity" bounds for L-functions. We will explain the connection between these two problems, and show some of the techniques which arise in proving subconvexity. Finally, we will discuss analogous problems on higher rank spaces, where L-functions alone are not enough to do the job...

The alcove seminar's name originates from the traditional venue for it's meetings: the small alcoves spotting the halls of the math department. The seminar is aimed at being more approachable than the department number theory seminar.
