The Duluth REU
Last summer I was at Gary Sherman's group theory program in Indiana. The program philosophy was to have people work in teams, which was a different approach from for instance the Duluth program in which people work individually. this is a very important element to consider. personally, I enjoyed the teamwork and was surprised at how personal tensions seemed to resolve themselves.

The participants ranged a lot in "ability." I didn't feel much pressure--Gary is awesome. We worked on several different problems and actually did really exciting research! It was not just reading out of books (in fact we hardly ever did this)! The math was pure group theory and the summer was intellectually an amazing experience!

I also want to recommend Joe Gallian's Duluth program which I did 2 years ago. That was also a lot of research and tremendously fun. Also, unlike the Rose Hulman campus, which has almost all males on it (it's a co-ed school), there were females too in Duluth. Joe is a tremendously awesome person too! Basically both of these programs are amazing experiences, with tremendous flexibility and personal freedom, awesome directors, and cool math!!
