slow matings

Part of my research has led to "slow matings". We form a skew product where the base map is the map on moduli space, and the map in the fiber is a rational map on the Riemann sphere. If we look in the fiber of this skew product we see evidence of slow mating for some special examples.

A twisted mating of the basilica with itself, moving along the 1/3 ray in the base. This movie is a pdf - open with a pdf viewer and scroll through the frames.

Two dancing basilicas obtained by moving along a semicircle of radius r=0.95 in the base. This movie is a pdf - open with a pdf viewer and scroll through the frames.

A twisted mating of the basilica with itself, eventually moving outside the unit circle in the base - notice the exchange of DNA. This movie was made by Xavier Buff. It is in gif format - open it with quicktime or in a web browser.

The mating of the rabbit and the basilica. This movie was made by Xavier Buff. It is in gif format - open it with quicktime or in a web browser.

The mating of two rabbits. This movie was made by Laurent Bartholdi. It is a mov file - open it in quicktime.

This is a short movie demonstrating how to get the rabbit as a quotient of the Julia set of z^4 (2-z^4). We are moving from 0 in the base to the rabbit fixed point. This is a pdf - open it with a pdf viewer and scroll through the frames.

There are many beautiful movies made by Arnaud Cheritat.
