Subject: = Radcliffe Fellowships in Science -- getting the word = out

Please circulate the message below = to faculty in your department.=A0 I've also mailed another poster announcing fellowships in case the one we sent last summer was taken down or you could otherwise use another poster. Thanks.

Dear Colleagues:

The deadline for applications for Radcliffe = fellowships is December 1.=A0 The application is short, certainly = compared to the grants applications most of us must prepare: a brief = (under 5 page) project description and three letters of reference.=A0 = It's not too late to encourage colleagues you would like to have in the = Cambridge/Boston area for a year to consider spending a sabbatical or = leave year at Radcliffe.=A0 Radcliffe's interdisciplinary community has = proved inspirational in many ways to science fellows. (Ask any of = them!)

The fellowship application is on the web at http://www.r adcliffe.edu/fellowships/apply/index.php.=A0 A list of recent science fellows is appended to this message so you may see the many different types of scientists who have participated since Radcliffe became an Institute for Advanced Study.

A few details that have = not been clear to some in the past bear mentioning. The typical fellows = (outside the arts) are faculty, and fellowship stipends are targeted to = complement sabbatical support from fellows' home institutions. Harvard = faculty may apply, and recent classes have included 8-10 Harvard junior = and senior faculty.=A0 We aim for a class diverse in many dimensions - = career stage (both senior and junior faculty), field, nationality, as = well as gender.=A0 It is possible for small groups as well as = individuals to apply, as the applications materials describe. In the = sciences, we also have been encouraging participation by researchers in = national or industry labs, though as with academics, we expect home = institutions to provide partial support.=A0 We do not ordinarily provide = postdoctoral fellowships for various reasons, including the large number = of alternative sources of funding for such positions.

More general information about Radcliffe can be found by following various links at http://www.radcliffe.edu with general fellowships information, including links to a complete list of this year's fellows and the fall schedule of fellows' presentations at http://www. radcliffe.edu/fellowships/events/index.php.=A0

Last year I = was contacted in December and January about many people who would have = been wonderful to have as fellows, but it was too late to include them = in the selection process for 2005-2006.=A0 I'd like to make sure we = don't similarly miss opportunities for 2006-2007.=A0 If you have = questions or would like to brainstorm about ideas and potential = candidates, please let me know.

Finally, I invite you to join us = for the science fellows' lectures.=A0 If you don't see someone listed = whose talk you'd like to attend, s/he may be giving a talk in the spring = or primarily to the fellows (to which we'd be glad to invite you if you = let us know).=A0 The Radcliffe calendar also includes a Dean's = Lecture by Ray Jayawardhana, University of Toronto, a panel of = distinguished women astronomers entitled,=A0 "The Sky's Not the Limit: = Women in Astronomy," and science lectures by Debra Fischer, San = Francisco State University, and Elizabeth Lada, University of Florida. = More information is on the Radcliffe website, http://www.radcliffe .edu/events/calendar.php

Wishes for a good and productive year.
