01/23/2012 : Congratulations to Michael Hopkins for the NAS Award for his leading role in the development of homotopy theory, which has both reinvigorated algebraic topology as a central field in mathematics and led to the resolution of the Kervaire invariant problem for framed manifolds. 11/30/2011 : The 72nd Annual Putnam Mathematical Competition takes place Saturday, December 3, 2011. The morning session begins at 10:00 AM and ends at 1:00 PM The afternoon session begins at 3:00 PM and ends at 6:00 PM. 06/02/2011 : The library and common room renovations in the mathematics department have begun. The books and journals have moved already to temporary storage places.

04/26/2011 : Congratulations to Dick Gross for winning the senior faculty Levenson award and Pei-Yu Tsai for winning the teaching fellows Levenson award. The picture shows Joe Blitzstein from statistics who won the junior faculty prize this year. 04/22/2011 : Congratulations the department's Bok teaching award winners: Nathan Kaplan, Jerry Wang, and Yu-Shen Lin, (Gen Ed, 221,and 1b) undergrads Lily Hsiang (21a), Jessica Hwang (Ma), Zhihao Luo (23a), Rob Mrkonich (1b), and Will Cember (144) The Harvard University Certificate of Teaching Excellence was awarded to Jameel Al-Adroos (21a) , Juliana Belding (Ma and 152), Janet Chen (Ma and 1b) and Paul Bourgade (297). Jack Huizenga was awarded the Derek C. Bok Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Teaching of Undergraduates.
04/04/2011 : Mathematics Awareness Month, April 2011: The American Mathematical Society, the American Statistical Association, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics announce that the theme of Mathematics Awareness Month 2011 is "Unraveling Complex Systems." To the website. 04/02/2011 : 24 Juniors elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Two of the 24 are Mathematics concentrators, Eva Belmont and Philip Mocz (where Philip is joint with Astrophysics).
03/24/2011 : The 2010 Putnam competition results were 1. Caltech, 2. MIT, 3. Harvard, 4. UC Berkeley, 5. U Waterloo. Please congratulate our team members, Kevin Lee, Arnav Tripathy and Alex Zhai. Each receives $600. Alex Zhai is a Putnam Fellow, a top-five finisher and carries an award of $2,500. Congratulations to Iurie Boreico, Eric Larson and Arnav Tripathy for being among the next ten highest ranking individuals with a prize of $1000, and congratulations to Sherry Gong for an honorable mention. We had outstanding individual results, with four students placing into the top 15. 03/14/2011 : Congratulations to Jonathan Wang, Harvard senior, who was recently awarded the Churchill Scholarship by the Winston Churchill Foundation of the United States. This is a scholarship for a year of post-graduate study and research in the sciences, engineering and mathematics at the University of Cambridge. Competition for this Scholarship is rather intense with only fourteen Scholarships awarded this year.

Or email hmmt-request@mit.edu for any questions. 01/31/2011 : Congratulations to Peter Kronheimer who won jointly with Tomasz Mrowka the AMS 2011 Joseph L. Doob Prize for their outstanding research book "Monopoles and Three-Manifolds", Cambridge University Press, 2007. that makes a seminal contribution to the research literature.
01/13/2011 : This year's Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM) takes place February 10-14, 2011. Details. Interested students please organize a 3-person team and inform Peter Kronheimer kronheim@math.harvard.edu about the names of the members, by February 4th, 2011 to have a team 'advisor' assigned to register. The Department covers registration fees. 01/06/2011 : It is with sadness that we have to announce the death of Dale Winter who passed away January 5th, 2011. Dale had been a preceptor at the Mathematics department from 2000 to 2003.
