Deligne and Mumford compactified the space of smooth curves by identifying a class of singular curves, namely the Deligne-Mumford stable curves, with the property that every incomplete 1-parameter family of smooth curves has a unique limit contained in that class. In this talk, we will give a general recipe for producing alternate classes of singular curves with this same unique-limit property. (Schubert's moduli space of pseudostable curves and Hassett's moduli spaces of weighted pointed curves will arise as special cases of this construction.)
