Chad Schoen introduced the idea to construct Calabi-Yau threefolds as fibre products of rational elliptic surfaces. This construction has many interesting applications in algebraic geometry, number theory and physics. In this talk we will sketch three of them:

- rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds with a view towards modular forms,
- examples with new pairs (h^1,1, h^1,2),
- non-liftable Calabi-Yau threefolds in positive characteristic.
